About

A career as a Senior Groom

Senior Grooms look after horses and manage stable staff in equestrian centres, studs and racing yards. They work closely with the Yard Manager and oversee the work of the Groom team ensuring the horses remain healthy, happy and in good condition.

Senior Grooms will interact more with the riders and horse owners at yard – they will provide information on the horse, including their wellbeing, and any behaviour traits to look for when riding.

Senior Grooms will also have more responsibility preparing horses for shows and competitions and will travel with the horses to the events.

Also known as: Head Groom

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • a genuine interest in horses and their welfare needs

  • to be ambitious and lead others by example

  • to work outdoors in all weathers

  • to be confident, with excellent communication and customer service skills

  • good observational skills and attention to detail

  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination, and a good level of fitness and stamina

  • patience and the ability to stay calm under pressure
