A career as a Horticultural Technician

Horticultural Technicians grow and nurture plants including vegetables, fruit, trees, shrubs and flowers. They specialise within specific areas of horticulture, including quality assurance, irrigation, spraying, glasshouses, soil or as part of a team working in laboratories.

Horticultural Technicians tend to work either in educational or research establishments or for commercial enterprises such as landscape contractors or Market Gardeners. Work can take place in outdoor environments such as fields of agricultural produce, or in indoor environments such as hydroponics facilities and greenhouses.

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • a knowledge of science and plants

  • a passion for nurturing plants, ensuring they are healthy

  • to be accurate and pay attention to detail

  • patience, perseverance and good concentration

  • to work well in a team and on your own initiative

  • to be flexible and open to change

You may be required to use machinery and need relevant certificates to do this. PPE will be provided such as overalls, gloves and safety boots.

Typical Hours

Around 40 hour per week, often involving evenings and weekends. They may also do longer hours at certain times if they find themselves in seasonal work.

Day to Day
  • Prepare soil for seed planting

  • Grow plants using different techniques

  • Check that plants meet required standards

  • Diagnose and deal with plant diseases, minimising losses

  • Examine plant specimens and record relevant data

  • Control plant disease and pests

  • Manage irrigation systems watering and fertilising plants

  • Manage environmental controls within a production environment

Working Environment

Working environments include laboratories, glasshouses and outdoor garden centres. Much of the work might be outdoors in all weathers.
