A career as a Technical Advisor

Agricultural Advisers offer specialist services and support to farmers and growers. They advise and work with farmers to ensure that the farm enterprises are performing at their best. This can involve identifying and providing solutions to technical problems, such as diseases in crops or livestock, feeding livestock or farm building construction, as well as monitoring the financial impact of changes. They may also assist with business planning and cash flow budgeting.

This role provides an opportunity to make a positive difference and ensure the sustainability of farming enterprises into the future.

Skills/Knowledge

You’ll need:

  • good attention to detail

  • to manage budgets and provide financial forecasts

  • to develop marketing and sales plans

  • to analyse information and present it in an easily understood format

  • to monitor and control the use of resources

  • to be well organised

  • to be computer literate and able to maintain accurate records

  • be aware of health and safety issues

  • be able to get on with different people and have excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • to be flexible in your approach to work

Typical Hours

35-40 hours per week. As you are working with clients, you may need to work outside normal working hours to ensure that meetings are convenient for the client.

Day to Day

The role of the Technical Adviser is varied. Depending on your employer and sector of the industry you work in, you could:

  • collect and analyse information

  • plan and implement pest and disease control measures

  • devise better ways of keeping and feeding livestock

  • advise on developing new crops and more efficient growing methods

  • advise fruit growers and market gardeners on how to get the best out of their business

  • liaise with businesses that produce seeds or chemicals for agriculture and horticulture to find out about their products

  • write reports

  • give presentations and organise demonstrations

  • keep up to date with and advise clients on developments in the industry

  • keep up to date with relevant legislation

Working Environment

Technical Advisors can work closely with farmers, manufacturers of products such as animal feeds and seeds, veterinary surgeons and with agricultural scientists who carry out research.

Some Advisors work in research and development, and related work where scientific research results are put into practice on farms. You may have to wear protective clothing on farms, in glasshouses or in laboratories.
